(Classes will begin on Saturday at 12:45 p.m. and end Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.)

Below is how a typical day transpires. It is meant to provide a representation of lectures and rehearsals at the Choral School.

7:30 - 8:30 a.m. Breakfast

8:30 - 9:30 a.m. Group Warm-up and Choral Lecture

Clinicians will present their warm-up philosophies, activities and materials
Examining primary elements of ensemble & their impact on choral tone philosophy
Vowels & Consonants—A vocal approach
What is blend?
Ensemble seating, Pitch and vowel integrity, Vocal color typologies,
Balance: hearing and teaching, Achieving rhythmic precision
Dynamics: A vocal approach to dynamic shaping

9:30-10:45 a.m. Focus on Conducting & Rehearsal Technique

Conducting Technique - “Do you really know the score?”
“Are you hearing your choir?” and “Are they seeing what you ‘hear’?”
Exercises in developing hearing accuracy and developing pitch discrimination
Technique vs. Teaching—or Zen and the Art of Choral Rehearsal

10:45 - 11:00 a.m. Break for Refreshments

11:00 a.m. - Noon Choral Rehearsal with René Clausen/Anton Armstrong/Craig Arnold

In addition to the sheer joy of singing, learn how Dr. Clausen and Anton Armstrong/Craig Arnold fix problems, pace rehearsals, and communicate with a choir.

Noon - 1:30 p.m. Lunch

1:30 - 2:45 p.m. Break out sessions

Questions and answers about composing, publishing and commissions
How do I record, produce, market and sell a recording of my choir?
Musical and managerial issues surrounding community choirs
Quality high school, church and college literature reading sessions

2:40 - 3:00 p.m. Break

3:00 - 4:00 p.m. Choral Rehearsal with René Clausen

Learning by doing—verbal & gestural techniques in making musical communication

4:00 - 5:00 p.m. General Session

“The status of church music today and our role as conductor/educator”
Performance practice issues of the major compositional era including choosing
editions, accurate basis of interpretation, and making performance decisions.
Philosophies of choral tone; and the composer’s view on style and phrasing

5:00 - 7:00 p.m. Dinner

7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Choral Rehearsal with René Clausen

8:30 p.m. Evening social activity (we will end at 3:15 pm on the final day)
